Chicago Westside Music Festival 2018
September 1, 2018
The Chicago Westside Music Festival has become one of the premiere Chicago festivals that we look forward to each year. The festival was held on August 18, 2018 making this it's 7th year at Douglas Park. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Westside Cultural Foundation was founded in 2012 to establish the west side as a destination for cultural and educational programming. Inspired by the late Chicago official, Michael Scott, Sr., WSMF is intended to shine light on the positive contributions, culture, and people of Chicago’s West Side. The festival is free and it draws hundreds of people who come out to enjoy a day of fun.
The day started with the End of Summer Celebration, sponsored by the 24th Ward Alderman, Michael Scott, Jr. The kids were given book bags to assist in a successful school year and they were able to participate in various games and activities along with the Chicago Park District. Food vendors were also on site throughout the day.
The musical portion of the day started at 4 pm and was hosted by Comedian and WGCI Radio Personality, Leon Rogers. Leon kept the crowd entertained throughout the evening with his comedy and dance battles. The crowd loved every minute of it.
Local Chicago talent Asia, Lil Woo, Alvin Ailey Dancers, Dorian Adams, Daniel Lamar and Christal Luster opened the show, followed by the headliners 702, SILK, and Angie Stone. The crowd was also treated to some surprise guests including Chitown’s own Cold Hard from Crucial Conflict & Twista.
The crowd loved the 90’s vibe from 702 who sang some of their hits including “Where My Girls At.” SILK took the stage next and the crowd was ready. Singing along to some of their hits such as “Freak Me” and “Meeting in my Bedroom.” Silk was discovered by R&B Singer, Keith Sweat 25 years ago and they are still going strong.
twinKonnections had an opportunity to Konnect with SILK. Check out our interview below.
Angie Stone, who is known for her hit “No More Rain (In This Cloud)” was up next!!! Angie hit the stage and surprised the crowd with a performance by Blondie, who was part of her rap trio group in the early 1970’s, The Sequence, consisting of Angie, Cheryl The Pearl, and Blondie. Angie gave the crowd some real R&B music, and everyone enjoyed it.
Past headliners of the festival include performers such as Dru Hill, Vivian Green, Lil’ Mo, Kelly Price, Slick Rick, MC Lyte, Bell Biv DeVoe, Musiq Soulchild, Syleena Johnson, Brownstone and 112.
The Chicago Westside Music Festival is a safe, family friendly event that we are sure will continue for many years to come. We look forward to seeing everyone there next year with your family to enjoy all the fun. Check out videos and photos below.
