“Set it off” Live on Stage produced and directed by Je’Caryous Johnson finally made its run in Chicago on Friday April 13, 2018 & Saturday April 14, 2018 for three packed shows. The reviews prior to the play it hitting Chicago raved that it was definitely a show that you didn’t want to miss. I attended the 8pm show on Friday April 13, 2018 and when I 1st sat down to watch the performance, I was excited but a little skeptical. My thoughts were how is Je’Caryous Johnson really going to bring such a classic movie to the stage, that audiences have been watching over and over again since it was released nationwide on November 6, 1996. Mr. Johnson is known for producing quality productions in the past such as the Married But Single I & II and Je’Caryous Johnson presents “Two Can Play That Game” so I hoped that he would bring the same quality to this play as well. All I can say is that when the last song was sung, and the last line was spoken, any thoughts of me wondering how he was going to pull it off were nowhere to be found. I loved his adaptation of the play. He did an excellent job bringing the story of four best friends who shared similar struggles through life to life live on stage. The play was action packed and it definitely highlighted some break out stars. In my opinion, the show was stolen by one of the greatest female rappers of all time, multi-platinum selling recording artist DA Brat as “CLEO.” She definitely lit up the stage. At the end of the first act, she truly displayed why she is considered one of the greatest female rappers. She left me wanting to hear more. She could have given us a full rap concert at that moment. She was so funny and she displayed her serious side as well. She was the perfect person to play “Cleo.” Grammy Award Winning Singer & Actress and former Destiny’s Child Member LeToya Luckett played the role of “Frankie.” Seeing her in this role was definitely in contrast to some of her former roles in Single Ladies & Green Leaf which I thought she really pulled it off. The role of T.T. was played by Singer & Actress Demetria McKinney who is most commonly known from her role as Janine Payne in Tyler Perry’s House of Payne. Demetria did a great job of displaying her acting and singing skills. Last but not least, the role of “Stony” was played by the former child actress that we all love Kyla Pratt. Kyla definitely brought the role of “Stony” to Life. She has grown so much from her Love & Basketball and Dr. Dolittle days. We all fell in love with her as a kid and as an adult now, she remains a truly gifted actress. The other cast members were also phenomenal. Je’Caryous Johnson has another hit on his hands. I am sure that the original cast members of Set It Off would give this production the thumbs up!!! If you have not checked out the play yet, make sure you do when it comes to a city near you.
